Hey all - just finished Alan wake this week and was so blown away I’m moving straight to American nightmare. I’m about 1/3 of the way in and I’m confused about some stuff - is he still trapped in the dark place? If not, is it assumed he finished writing ‘the return’ and is back in the real world?
How are these 2 stories related to each other?I’ve also read that there’s some other content besides the games that have canon info - what would those be and which of them are worth picking up?Thanks guys!. Yeah, Alan Wake is still in the Dark Place, and he's learning how to bend it to his will. Though it's proving very difficult.
No spoilers, but the ending of American Nightmare won't be what it seems, there's an important scene after credits. The simplified version is that as Alan Wake is writing his story, he's basing it all on the Monomyth (google if you want), which consists of three major parts: Departure, Initiation, ReturnAlan Wake has finished Departure and must do Initiation. Even though he's writing Return, this whole stage actually serves as Initiation. After he passes initiation, he can begin Return and become the master of two worlds. Basically, American Nightmare is Initiation (again, even though Alan Wake is trying to make it the Return).Yes, there's content beyond Alan Wake games. Most importantly, there's Control, which is an indirect sequel - it happens in the same universe, 10 years after Alan Wake, and it will play a role in the actual sequel. It greatly expands the whole universe.
If you like Alan Wake, I'm confident you will like Control as well.There's. This is something created by the devs and it's 100% canon, it's even mentioned in control. There are two comics, you can read both of them and (The conclusion of these comics is that Emil Hartman is alive and is apparently joining the FBC (at least that's what it looks like, it's not stated outright), and Sarah Breaker's father used to be an FBC agent and he's alright after the events of the game. There's Alan Wake Files book, if you've bought the game on Steam, you should be able to find it as a PDF inside you Alan Wake install directory. Should you have trouble finding it, let me know, I'll send it to you. The Book is interesting and I liked it, it does expand the story a bit, but honestly doesn't do much in terms of separate storytelling. There's which served as a prequel to Alan Wake.In 2018, there was talks about an Alan Wake TV show.
We have not gotten a word about it since, but there has not been a confirmation of it being canceled either.Hope I haven't forgotten anything. And if you're into Alan Wake, potentially good news, one is supposed to be a large project and the second is supposed to be a smaller project from the same universe. The most common speculation is that the smaller project is Alan Wake Remaster and the large project is Alan Wake 2.
After the events of Alan Wake, our eponymous hero finds himself in the middle of a new adventure in Arizona, where his own words again hold the key to defeating his evil twin, the malevolent Mr. Scratch, who spreads darkness where he goes. Now more experienced at dealing with the weird and horrific, Wake is determined to turn the tide.
18th of August this year, Remedy will be 25 years old and they're probably going to make some announcement. Wow im blown away by the scope of this response thank you so much! Im absolutely a fan of control and plan on playing it once I get the proper computer upgrades.I was initially drawn into the 'remedyverse' after playing quantum break - I know the IP licensing issue is still a thing but is it safe to say its also folded into all this? Alan wake is referenced many times in QB as an author in that universe, and the Alex Casey series exists in that world as well. Thanks again for taking the time to respond in full. Right now, we don't know about QB and the fan base is divided about this. I'm more of a skeptic and maintain that until Remedy specifically says they're connected, we should not assume they are.Quantum Break was pitched to Microsoft after they turned down both Alan Wake 2 and Control, they didn't want another Alan Wake game.
Sam Lake, writer of both Control and Alan Wake, was not in fact a writer on Quantum Break, ha was a director I believe. So that could be an indicator it was not meant to interact with Alan Wake in terms of actual story. There's some in-game stuff like Alan Wake being a videogame and a book in Quantum Break, so it would mean that Alan Wake is also a videogame and a book in Alan Wake. There definitely are great ways how Quantum Break could interact (especially character character interactions), but there's also a lot of things they'd need to account for to prevent plot holes.
So I guess it's up to the player. It's more of his battle against the Dark Place, so kind of like mini episode where you can see just a bit of what is happening in Alan's process of writing the story. This is the story called 'Initiation', meaning he's beginning to get out of the Dark Presence and beginning to write his escape.Sadly, he hasn't gotten out even ten years later. You can also check out this blog called 'This House of Dreams', which basically is a stepping stone with things from Alan Wake, and pieces of Control, another in universe game with Alan Wake. So yes, they're connected and highly suggest playing Control, as it has clear references all over the place of Alan.
Don't want to spoil too much, but it's awesome.
